Personal Statement
Thinker and Tinker — I am aspiring to be a conscientious designer by seeking to bring fresh and sustainable ideas to projects. I believe that there is room for improvement for the material consumption in our current lifestyles, and we can be more educated on how it affects our living environment. I hope to encourage green consumerism through Home and Lifestyle product design. I am resourcefulness and resilient, which draws me to design-entrepreneurship.

THE PROTOTYPE BLOG
In February 2020, I began blogging about my learning experiences from design and other exposures as I am an ambitious learner who enjoys the process of learning. "Prototype" became the name of the blog as prototyping, like learning, is an iterative process that emphasizes value in the journey not the destination.
2019-2020
CAFÉ ENTRÉE
3 classmates and I build a business model to win a 2-year lease to run an FnB space on Campus in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. We emerged as finalists! Café Entrée is a café/rentable shop for student entrepreneurs to sell their e-commerce products and rent is collected as an commission on sales. One of my contributions in the business development was sourcing for suppliers that redistributes surplus ingredients from restaurants to curb food waste and our team made it a point to reduce plastic in our takeaway packaging.

Community Work
2019-2020
Play Space Design with HSCA Dayspring SPIN
BUILDxPLAY is a participatory design project where we create a play area in the open yard of HCSA Social Service Centre for the kids of the Single Parents Community, SPIN. This was a Year 2 Studio Project and in a team of 5, we proposed the concept "Play Garden", where kids and parents can spend time close to nature. In this garden, a water gun station serves as a fun plant watering activity for when the kids come to play. Otherwise, the edible plants is a development with potential for HSCA, also home to the Halfway House, where ex-convicts pick up cutlinery skills for employment.

YEP Trip to
Kampung Naga, Indonesia
Tasikmalaya is a 3 hour bus ride from the city of Bandung. At Kampung Naga, we followed up with the construction of a Village Kindergarten, an Architecture Project from the graduating batch of Architecture Students from the School of Design and Environment in our Polytechnic. The village carpenters are well-skilled in their trade, and build with natural materials like bamboo and wood planks, without power tools.
In the 8 days with the community, we forged friendships with the locals through learning about their livelihoods, entertaining the kids at the local primary school and cooking meals together.
2018-2019
Leather Craft Workshop Facilitator for the Special Needs
Under Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Makers' Academy, a prototyping space for Ngee Ann Students, I joined a Leather Craft program where we were taught basic techniques for the making of leather keychains, lanyards and passport holders, communication skills with the Special Needs and exposure to Socio-Enterprises. The beneficiaries I worked with were The Mustard Seed and AWWA School.
Enrichment
2020
SCDF x IBM Hackathon
Whilst undertaking Home-Based Learning throughout Term 1 of Year 3, my friends and I participated in a beginner-friendly hackathon for the innovation of civil defense response tactics in uncertain times. It was a good time to learn a new skill and IBM Cloud allows us to prototype digital products without coding. They provided us with resources to learn about SCDF as well as starter kits for creating solutions. As design classmates, we were able to transfer design-thinking skills into ideating for new solutions. It was a valuable experience as we were introduced to the design work of digital products and the possibilities of technology. I am excited to join Hackathons as a design team member or Designathons in Future.
2019
TOKYO-HIDA
Furniture Design Study Trip
This study trip comprises of a 4-day stay at Hidakuma, a quaint and polite town, where we stayed at FabCafe and was introduced to the local woodwork and craft culture, tried our hands at making joinery, planing and sanding, and visited a furniture factory. We then toured the bustling city of Tokyo by visiting show rooms, design stores and museums. The creative spirit of Japanese Designers is pure, minimalist and extremely innovative in they way they push manufacturing capabilities of wood. Biomimicry is a strong trend in Japanese work, as they love to derive inspiration from nature. This was evident in our visit to a Design Exhibition inspired by the study of bugs!
2019
INNOPOLY WEEK
The Sand Box organised a event on Campus to introduce topics of innovation to the students through a 3 Day line up of talks, workshops and demonstrations. With a theme for each day, FinTech, Start Ups and Makers.. I attended a handful of talks between my day of classes and was introduced to the future of FinTech and Drone technology. Indeed a fulfilling experience!
2019
IKEA YOUNG DESIGNERS' AWARD
Ikea's Young Designers' Award is a challenge I look forward to every year. In 2018, I came up short with ideas for the 'Clean Energy' Challenge as a fresh Year 1 student with 2 months into the design course. In 2019, I partnered with a classmate for the 'Zero Waste' Challenge and entered with a grocery bag designed for zero waste shopping. Unfortunately, we did not make the cut, but it was a great first experience entering a product design competition!
2019
SINGAPORE DESIGN WEEK FORUM
Singapore Design Week is an exciting season as it draws global industry practitioners to our city to share and inspire the next generation of designers. As an aspiring designer, I really look forward to and seek these events to broaden my worldviews. In this forum, I glimpsed at the ever-changing landscape of design across disciplines: architecture, product design and spacial design.
2019
SOCIO-ENTREPRENEURSHIP
BOOTCAMP
The Makers' Academy organised a bootcamp for workshop facilitators of leather-craft the special needs. We learnt from the social enterprise, The Mustard Seed, on how underserved communities can benefit from design and innovative solutions. Over a course of 2 days, we spilt into two teams of 4 and developed a product/service and a business model to help a marginalised group. With a bed that rolls up, we tried to create a frame with legs and a mat that could allow the homeless to sleep off the floor, instead of sleeping bags, to improve their temporary living conditions. Although there was only two teams, It was rewarding to be titled winning pitch at the end of the bootcamp!
2018
CULTURE CARTEL
My classmates and I were lucky to be eligible for free tickets to the street culture showcase, where fashion, tattoo, graffiti and skateboard artists exhibit their works and give talks. It was a new cultural experience to me, as they were friendly and united with a creative spirit. I got to understand a genre of design work that I wouldn't have been able to on a daily basis and for that I am grateful! There were graffiti artists painting in VR headsets, a car painted white with black illustration strokes, racks of clothes and surprisingly, people voluntarily getting blind tattoos for a tattoo competition.
