FunTion | Cement TableTop Objects

Brief: Using Cement, design an tabletop object that belongs to a family of products with your teammates.

About:

Funtion are nolstalgic, playground-inspired dining table objects to serve the dynamic needs of the family's common space throughout the day with an injection of fun.

Prototyping

This project involves considering and working with the material of choice throughout the design process, including fleshing it out! Sometimes, we mix the wrong ratio of water and cement, causing the product to be brittle. Thin parts like my handle are vulnerable!

My Design: SPIN

SPIN is inspired by playground roundabouts and it serves a dual purpose of being a study light and a food warmer. Dual-purposed products are our theme for this family of products as lesser items = lesser clutter.

As the table is used both for eating and working, I leveraged on the fact that incandescent light bulbs emit both light and heat.

As a light source: the "roundabout" shade allows you to direct the light towards your workspace on the table, so that you can have good lighting at night without disturbing the family by switching on the ceiling lights.

As a food warmer: whilst studying and working, we often enjoy having a snack by our side. However, food turns cold towards the end of long work sessions. By placing your dish/mug above the bulb, the heat keeps your study/work snacks warm!
